Tips & Recommendations

General

  • If there is a sign that clearly says 'No Camping', don't camp there!
  • It can be very difficult to find free campervan parking in the centre of a major town or city.  Often our spaces will be on the outskirts of an area.  As a general rule, we found being within 10km of a place means that you will have to pay to stay there overnight.  Sad, but true.
  • If it says no fires, don't have a fire!
  • If you have a couple of alcoholic drinks, don't drive.  Ever!

 Driving in New Zealand

  • If you intend to park on the side of the road, you must always park in the same direction as the traffic is flowing.
  • Some locations have a high density of non-local drivers.  Be sure to take extra care in these areas, especially when considering giving way.
  • If you are covering a bit of distance, check the details and make sure you have enough fuel.  In New Zealand especially, there are often distances of over 100km without petrol stations.  If you do carry some in your van, make sure it's a legal container.
  • Driving around there are several signs you may find useful.  The first is a blue square with a picture of a tree and bench on it.  It is usually shown 300-400m before the spot itself. About half of these places are available to stay at overnight and often have great views.
